MUONOPHONE

The Muonophone is a machine I built that allows me to make music using muon detectors. These muon detectors pick up harmless radiation caused by cosmic rays interacting with the Earth’s atmosphere. Every time a muon particle is detected, a note is generated. The strength of the muon determines the velocity of the note. From there it gets quantised, filtered, processed and sequenced to create soundscapes which I can then play alongside; like a duet between me and the cosmic forces. The instrument is the centrepiece in an audiovisual show called MŮO. This project was developed with Dr David Mahon from The University of Glasgow.
